Due to the specialized nature of different Institutional environments, each have unique lighting requirements to suit the varying occupants and unique activities that are performed within the space.
Educational Facilities
Eighty percent of what we know comes to us through our eyes. We know how important the quality of light is in the classroom. CFI Fluorescent Eye-Q pendants provide an efficient but soft lighting direct and indirect effect that is ideally suited to classroom lighting.
Health Care Facilities
In hospitals, the patient and caregiver have different visual tasks which require flexible lighting. The CFI MD4 multifunction patient room light combines a patient reading light, examination light, and nurses' night light into one tidy package that can be mounted on or recessed in to the ceiling. Hallways and gathering areas within health care facilities present a special challenge where patients can view bright ceiling lighting fixtures. CFI's Ceiling-Lyter and Alter 1'x 4' fixtures provide a unique design alternative for comfortable glare free hallway and corridor lighting
Senior Living
As we age, the eye becomes very sensitive to glare causing not only discomfort but also disability or reduced vision. The Alter series of fixtures from CFI provide soft shadow free low glare lighting ideally suited for use in senior care facilities.
Museums and Art Galleries
Lighting becomes a challenge in galleries and museums since exhibits change often. It is important to provide visibility and enhancement of the displays and exhibits with the flexibility of being able to relocate lighting equipment as needed. Prospec Track, Lightolier's innovative track lighting system blends easily into the architecture. Each track cylinder has a unique locking system so that once aimed it can be positively locked in place. Built in media cartridges allow lamps and accessories to be changed without disturbing the lighting effect.
Indoor Facilities
Many of the sports commonly played in gymnasiums, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton are known as "aerial sports" since players are frequently looking up and out, thereby bringing the ceiling into view. Because of this, it's a good idea to consider using a luminaire that has the light source shielded from the participants' and viewers' field of vision. A good choice here is the Keene Ultrabay, with its dropped acrylic refractor, in either 22" or 30" diameter. Along with glare control and visual comfort, the Ultrabay also provides a high-angle distribution pattern which delivers the required vertical illumination over the height of the playing area. In hockey arenas, where participants do not generally look up into the ceiling, the 400 or 1000 watt highbay is a frequent choice of lighting specifiers.
Travel Terminals
Canada has a rich history in transportation terminals that still exist in major centres. Lighting therefore plays an important part in the new design concepts to create an interesting "first impression" for travellers. In addition attention must be paid to the working areas of the terminal. Efficient glare free illumination using Calculite Arc Turbo Louver downlights in departure lounges and around the ticket agents is an important consideration for those working in the space.
