Architect Programs

Design Considerations for Healthcare

This program is designed to examine the trends in lighting healthcare application. We will focus on financial trends and issues, an aging population, new technology and the impact it has on healthcare; LED's impact, light therapy research, the effects light has on the biological clock, daylight needs and dynamic colour changing strategies; we will explore the options and solutions to creating healthy lighting environments in healthcare application. We will examine from Neonatal care to Laboratory applications.

Lighting for Wellbeing in Office & Institutional Application

This program is designed to examine new thinking in terms of lighting design when it comes to office application. Creating a space focused on the wellbeing of occupants, as well as the environment, is a strategy that can promote worker productivity, satisfaction of employees and the financial bottom line. Healthful Lighting design is a strategy focused on the employee's guests and environment, creating a dynamic, interesting and productive space.

SSL Evolution: where did it begin, where is it now, where is it going?

Solid State Lighting (SSL) or Light Emitting Diodes (LED) has the potential to revolutionize lighting application and design. Governments in both the US and Canada, along with Canada's leading electric utilities, have singled out LED lighting as the next generation light source for general lighting in our homes, offices, streets and parking lots. Education plays a significant role in the adoption of this new technology. Successful deployment of SSL in application design requires the lighting designer to understand the differences between these and the more traditional light sources, and to know the performance characteristics of their application to both luminaire and to the intended application.

Navigating the World of Solid State (SSL) Lighting Systems

No longer is the light source specified separately from the luminaire. With the exception of a few retrofit replacement lamps the characteristics of LED (Light Emitting Diodes) SSL (Solid State Lighting), systems require luminaire manufacturers to make the light source integral to the luminaire. This systems approach to the manufacture of LED luminaire requires an understanding of the performance benefits and that the lighting designer is able to separate the myths from the realities in applying LED luminaires to their applications. How are the barriers overcome to move LED lighting systems into your every day lighting application.

Healthy Lighting for Senior Living

As we age, the physical and aesthetic manners in which we see are altered. A mature eye requires more light to function while being increasingly more sensitive to glare. The session will discuss some of the physiologies of this change and explore avenues to combat the changes in both institutional and residential applications. Awareness, empathy and knowledge are the keys to lighting solutions for the aging eye.

Office Lighting and LEED CI, a benchmark towards quality and sustainability

The CAGBC's LEED CI rating system puts emphasis on lighting. Guidelines for quality lighting coupled with high performance luminaire systems, daylight complimenting, and light control play a part in LEED CI. This session helps designers create a more productive and energy efficient space for the people who work in them. Learn the dimensions of good office lighting, see examples of new lighting equipment, and be informed about new guidelines that will help create a more pleasing space to work.

Innovations in Lighting Technologies: Incorporating New Lamp and Ballast into the Fixture

How Does it Look? How Does it Perform? - There have been many technology advances in light sources in the last few years, but without a system, new technologies cannot be used. This includes the source and the luminaire. Lighting fixtures need to perform, which means putting the light where you need it. They also need to be aesthetically attractive, by either blending into the architecture or acting as an architectural element. The issue of light control must also be taken into account. This session will examine the important aspects of luminaires and controls that must be considered when using new light sources and technologies.

Environmental Lighting for Exteriors

Environmental concerns are a pressing issue in every aspect of our lives. Exterior lighting is no different. Light pollution and light trespass are not only design issues, but are now becoming regulated more often by government organizations. The designer who is aware of these regulations and experienced with proper lighting techniques can accomplish the incredible. Whether it is for security, parking, or design aesthetics this program is for anyone working on lighting exteriors.
